ANALYSIS: The class par is 1:10.4 and the paper race goes to Travel Bound in 1:11.8. That is
s-l-o-w for the class. ‘Bound has not been close, but was a pace factor on the stretch-out and may benefit at this shorter trip. The same pattern belongs to Fractional Chart runner-up Bellamy Concerto (1:11.9). Mandella puts ‘Concerto up for sale for the first time and better is possible. The sub-par times should point us to the first and second-timers, though. Carson City Five debuts for Baffert, but arrives with 23 works and that’s too many to believe that he’s a serious threat. Skelton Pass shows a couple of 6F works for Gaines and rates a look. Rockport Kat is a comebacking second-timer that has been off for 12+ months and is making his first start for improvement-trainer Richard Baltas. The works are decent and he’s still in for more than he cost as a yearling ($50,000). He’s the obvious upset threat in an odd lineup.CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Travel Bound :25.8 – Bellamy Concerto :25.9

In Maiden or Maiden-Claiming races, when you see a horse that tops the charting five lengths slower (one second) or more it might be best to try runners with little or no experience as those that have raced haven’t shown much. Both Food Stamps and Rockport Kat have only raced once and maybe they can improve now that they have raced while Carson City Five and Skelton Pass are both first time starters who seem to catch a soft group for the level.
