ANALYSIS: Masochistic is obviously the one to beat. He’s won six of his last seven starts and all three of his races this year. He easily won a Grade I June 27 and is the HF 15 to make it four straight. Appealing Tale and Wild Dude finished 2-3 in that June 27 heat. ‘Tale is probably better with a little more distance to work with, while Wild Dude will likely be stalking in the hopes the other speed can soften up Masochistic. Distinctiv Passion pulled off the rare feat of winning his first start back after being shipped to Dubai. He won a Grade III May 25 at Santa Anita, but it was just a four-horse field. He is the one most likely to duel with Masochistic early. Finally, Kobe’s Back won a Grade III at Keeneland April 4 and was also 2nd to Wild Dude in a Grade II at Santa Anita March 7. He could do some rebounding from a poor showing in the Grade I Met Mile at Belmont June 6. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Masochistic :23.1 – Kobe’s Back, Wild Dude, Appealing Tale :23.5

Today’s pace projects as much slower than par time for the level with Caminetto setting the pace. Masochistic is pressing the pace early only about a 1/2 length behind the pace-setter at the first call. He also shows a fast final fraction of 23.1 and he tops the charting in faster than par time for the level. Masochistic has both the early speed and the late speed to make him a top contender in this event.
