Bench Warrant is the only horse with a win over this course,
as he ran down Jazzy Jeff in a Jan 15 Allowance. Both came back in the
Grade 2 San Vicente (‘Jeff was making his first start for Papaprodromou
after being tagged for $80,000) and ‘Warrant fared the better of the two,
as he finished with interest once clear of the tiring speed to check in a
close-up 4th. His Final Time Rating didn’t dip and he can get back in the
winner’s circle today. No Problem took on Dortmund and Firing Line
when stretched out for the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity Dec 20 and
proved no match for that talented duo, but is back sprinting and should get
a dream trip from the outside. Serbian Syclone was eased in the San
Vicente, but had won his two previous sprints for Peter Miller (Jazzy Jeff’s
original trainer) and gets blinkers for this. His speed may play better and
he can bounce back after recording back-to-back career tops in his wins.
Pain and Misery won twice at Zia Park last fall. His owners moved him
from Henry Dominguez to Richard Mandella (a rather significant change)
for his 2015 campaign and he returns with a steady string of works. He
can set or stalk the pace and the slow works suggest that Prat will likely try
to get him to relax. Speaking of Prat, he’s replaced by Bejarano on
Diamond Majesty. That one was 3rd behind ‘Warrant in the Jan 15
downhill sprint and has odds-beating potential. The first-named pair get
the HF 15a’s, but at least five of these have a legitimate chance to tally.

CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance
have been: Diamond Majesty and Bench Warrant :28.8 – Jazzy Josh :29.2
