The thing I've most noticed since the race is how everyone seems to be talking about how shocking and implausible Mine That Bird's win was, rather than focusing on his performance. I mean, the horse ran great, and he's getting zero credit for it. None. And he won by almost 7 lengths...

It just goes against EVERYTHING the Derby is about when a bum like that gets in and then wins. It was a fluke plain and simple and the jockey deserves most of the credit not the horse. Let's see if he ever wins another race all year long. I doubt it.

Most likely he just flipped out in the mud. I've heard drugs being mentioned as a possibility, but if this guy were in the business of "performance enhancement", he wouldn't have such a woeful record (1-for-32 on the year before Mine That Bird's win).

Just for the record, Mine That Bird's winning margin is greater than those of Barbaro and Big Brown, two horses who went into the Preakness as prohibitive favorites. Granted, they both possessed FAR better race records than does Mine That Bird, but the fact remains that Mine that Bird ran just as well in the Derby as either of those two horses. Btw, it'll be interesting to see what kind of Beyer figure Mine That Bird receives. My guess is it'll be far lower than if Dunkirk had won by 7 lengths.

I have wathced the derby about 7 times today, and that performance was strong, it's not like the horse had only one win, he was 5/8 with 4 wins and had 4 route races under his belt. Bred on top and bottom for distance and mud. Congrats to Calvin, this guy can flat out ride. The top three finishers never ran a 100 beyer (lol). fb | |

The rail ran strong all day long, would the horse won without Bo-rail on board, if ifs and buts were candy and nuts.......... the horse ran well and calvin gave him a perfect trip now lets hope he can win the preakness or the belmont pools are going to suck.

It is just amazing to me when you look at the overhead of the race how fast Mine that Bird is going and everyone else is stuck in the mud.

It's funny. At the last minute, I put a place bet in on the 8. I had boxed the 16,2,7,19 in an exacta box. I only did it because I read some guys posts at another site that said if the Bird horse comes in with Borel I lose all my tickets. Sure enough there he is. I don't buy into anything being done to the horse. Weather is a great equalizer in sports. I think that played a factor. Also it didn't hurt that he had Borel on him who obviously knows Churchill up and down.

Little is being said about POTN finishing second. If HE had been on the rail we might be talking about a legit contender for the Triple Crown. The real race going on 7 lengths behind MTB had POTN gritting it out to stay ahead of Musket Man. This horse is not just a synthetic specialist. I think his effort in the slop showed that he will be a contender on both surfaces. He's my pick for the Belmont.

I think Mine That Bird's Beyer came back low. So did Rachel Alexandra's, for that matter.
