Brethren won his career debut today in 1:08 4/5. Looks like he might be a good one. Here's what i wrote about him on my site this morning... Belmont - Race 2 #1A Brethren (9/5 ml) ***No play on the other half of the entry if Brethren scratches*** Quite an interesting first-time starter for Pletcher. His most recent drill was best-of-26 bullet that was fastest by nearly a full second over the next-fastest worker at that day's distance. In fact, 3 of his last 4 drills have been bullets, including one on Sep 19 that really catches the eye. Why's that? Because the next-fastest worker at that day's distance was Pletcher's Uncle Mo, current favorite for the BC Juvenile and Kentucky Derby. Price figures to be short here, but it really looks like this horse can run. Pletcher doesn't generally work his young horses this consistently fast, so the horse is likely doing it on his own.

Beginning today, we should start getting an idea of how strong Brethren's maiden win was. Second-place finisher Black N Beauty is entered in Race 10 @ Churchill today, while third-place finisher Kanagaro is entered in Race 2 @ Aqueduct tomorrow.

Kanagaro ran third @ Aqueduct today after some traffic problems. Not a bad performance at all. Think Brethren looks flattered so far. PS - I would expect him to turn up in the Kentucky Jocky Club @ Churchill, the same race that Super Saver won last year.

Brethren has indeed been entered @ Churchill on Kentucky Jockey Club day, but he's actually in an allowance race half an hour earlier.

I had a descent win wager and decided to wheel him in the exacta due to the fact that I thought Justin Phillip was far over used in the gimmicks. Luckily that 33-1 shot fought back on JP and claimed 2nd for a nice $108 Exacta. I expect this one to aim high next out. Thanks again for a 2 time winner. |

Yeah, i thought he looked very smooth out there, especially after the break where it looked like he might've hit the side of the gate coming out.

Here's the replay of Brethren's allowance win. He's the #12 horse in white silks on the outside. Notice the awkward break, btw: YouTube - Brethren, Churchill Downs 11-27-10

Interesting blurb in this Racing Form article about Pletcher/Uncle Mo: "Pletcher named at least three more colts with Derby potential: Brethren, a half-brother to Super Saver who is 2 for 2 and probably will have two Derby preps; Lauburu, an Unbridled’s Song colt being pointed to a Gulfstream allowance in late January; and Stay Thirsty, a Repole-owned colt whom Pletcher said will probably be ready to go around the same time as Uncle Mo but will be entered in different races." What i find interesting here is that Pletcher apparently told the reporter that Brethren would "probably have two Derby Preps". The thing is, Brethren's two wins have come in maiden and allowance races. That being the case, he currently has ZERO graded earnings. And Pletcher is mapping out a "two-preps" Derby schedule for this horse? What, is he already chalking them up as wins??? Strange if true. My guess is he'll be taking the Tampa Bay route, same as his brother. Super Saver had already picked up some graded earnings as a 2yo in the Kentucky Jockey Club though.

Just a quick heads-up on Brethren, it looks like he worked heads-up with the older multiple stakes winner Colizeo at Palm Meadows yesterday.
