Indian Blessing Relaxed in Work. At Santa Anita yesterday, Indian Blessing was reported to have worked seven furlongs in 1:24.80 (1/2), handily, as she was prepared for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. The work actually went six furlongs, but clockers put it down at seven. Former jockey Joe Steiner was aboard for the drill.

“It was very nice,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “It was a steady three-quarters. They got her galloping out seven-eighths, but it was really nice. She was relaxed. She didn’t go too fast, but fast enough. She looked good.

“She went off easy from the three-quarter pole,” said Steiner, “and coasted down the backside, then picked it up from the quarter to the seven (furlong marker). She came home from the three-quarter pole to the seventh-eighths. That’s how they got the seven-eighths.”


Sadler Has Strong BC Hand. John Sadler, the leading trainer at the recent Hollywood Park and Del Mar meets, expects to have a busy and successful Breeders’ Cup. Oak Tree at Santa Anita’s leading trainer, with nine wins through Sunday, plans to run the following horses:

--Dearest Trickski in the Filly & Mare Sprint. In her most recent start, Dearest Trickski, a 4-year-old, won the Grade III Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 24.

--Emmy Darling in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. She was most recently tenth in the Grade I Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 1. She's never run on turf but will undoubtedly find a softer spot in the Juvenile Fillies Turf than in the Juvenile Fillies.

--Evita Argentina in the Juvenile Fillies. She won the Grade III Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar before finishing fourth in the Del Mar Debutante.

--Get Funky in the Turf Sprint. He's won five of six turf sprint races, with his sole loss coming last time out in the Grade III Morvich Stakes on Sept. 24. Get Funky finished second to longshot California Flag, who broke a 4 2/3-year-old track record on Santa Anita's downhill turf course.

--Whatsthescript in the Mile. On Aug. 24, Whatsthescript won the Grade II Del Mar Mile after he unleashed a withering stretch run. He was helped along by a fast half-mile pace set by Storm Military.

--Zappa in the Marathon. On July 30, Zappa earned a spot in the Marathon by winning the 1 1/2-mile Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar. Since then, he's been fourth in the Grade I Pacific Classic and seventh in the Grade I Goodwood Stakes.


Baffert to Work Cup Pair Today. Baffert, who has five Breeders’ Cup wins from 47 starters, added that 2007 Sprint champion Midnight Lute and Juvenile contender Midshipman, runner-up in the Grade I Norfolk Stakes, are scheduled to work today.


Curlin Galloping Along. Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen, said Curlin galloped two miles Sunday preliminary to his public workout at five furlongs in company today between the fourth and fifth races. The drill will be televised live from Santa Anita on HRTV.


Azul Leon to Try Again in Juvenile. Azul Leon, sixth in the Grade I Norfolk Stakes on Sept. 28, worked four furlongs Sunday on Pro-Ride in :48.00 (18/65) for the Juvenile.

“He worked super and galloped out great,” said trainer Doug O’Neill, who was on hand for the drill. “We’re excited about rebounding after the Norfolk disappointment. We were far back early, but there were no major excuses.”

In the 1 1/16-mile, Grade I Norfolk on Sept. 28, Azul Leon was characteristically at the rear early, but he didn't make his usual strong stretch run. He finished sixth, beaten 4 3/4 lengths by Street Hero.

Azul Leon, a son of Lion Heart, won the July 5 Hollywood Juvenile Championship and the Grade II Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 10, running his record to three wins in three starts. The Norfolk was his first race at two turns.


Better Talk Now Still Viable for Turf. With a work set for today at Fair Hill Training Center, Graham Motion said Sunday morning that 2004 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Better Talk Now may go in the 2008 edition. “If he works well, we will pre-enter him,” Motion said. Tuesday is the deadline to pre-enter.


Red Rocks Puts in Fourth Work. New trainer Hennig had to be feeling snakebit when Red Rocks, the early 9-5 favorite for the Aug. 16 Grade I Sword Dancer Invitational, was scratched because of filling in his left hock. The filling, "and the prospect of running over soft turf with the possibility of further aggravating it," led Hennig to the decision, he said.

At the time, Hennig said he did not have an alternate race picked out yet. “We want to get this handled first,” he said. “And there are plenty of opportunities coming up in the fall.”

Will one of those opportunities be Breeders' Cup? Yesterday at Belmont Park, Red Rocks put in his fourth workout since he was scratched from the Sword Dancer.

Stardom Bound Work 'Perfect'. Oak Leaf Stakes winner Stardom Bound, the probable favorite for the Juvenile Fillies, worked five furlongs Saturday on Hollywood Park’s Cushion Track in 59.80, breezing. “I got her in :59 2/5 and she galloped out in 1:12 1/5,” said trainer Chris Paasch. “It was perfect.”


Square Eddie 'Training Great'. Doug O’Neill has barely had Square Eddie long enough to know his routine, but the 40-year-old trainer knows this much: the winner of last Saturday’s Lane’s End Futurity can run. O’Neill won the 2005 Juvenile with champion Stevie Wonderboy for the late Merv Griffin.

“He’s training great and galloping super,” said O’Neill, who is readying the recent J. Paul Reddam acquisition for the Juvenile. “The only similarity I’ve noticed so far between Square Eddie and Stevie Wonderboy is they’re both extremely classy individuals.”


Ellis Assesses Juvenile Crop, SA Surface. Trainer Ron Ellis on Believe in Hope, who was third by less than a length in the Norfolk Stakes on Sept. 28: “We’re not in any hurry with him. He’s fit, so I don’t have to prove anything. It’s hard to tell how good the 2-year-olds are overall. All I know is, we match up with all the 2-year-olds that are here, and I know that we’ve had a race over the track.

“Not all horses are going to like the synthetic, and mine showed that he can handle it, so that was a good thing. I’m not training day in and day out at Santa Anita, so I don’t know what the Pro-Ride is like in that regard, but the horses I’ve run have all come out really good. It’s made me really nervous, because any time horses are running as fast as they have been here, you worry about the track being too hard. All I can go by is the horses that I’ve run seemed to have come out perfect.”

Latest Division Crossover: Champs Elysees. One of the battles of covering--and following--the runup to Breeders' Cup this year is the confluence of synthetic track and turf course, producing prospects that might run on either surface. The latest crossover is Champs Elysees, most recently third in the $2,000,000 Canadian International at 1 1/2 mile on turf at Woodbine last Saturday.

Bobby Frankel said Champs Elysees is being pointed to the $5-million Classic on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride main track. The son of Danehill was an eventful third in the Santa Anita Handicap on an altered version of Cushion Track last March.

“I guess it was a different surface than it is now,” Frankel said. “Who knows?”

At any rate, for a $5-million jackpot, Frankel is rolling the dice.


Colonel John Lands Prado. Eoin Harty said Edgar Prado will ride Travers Stakes winner Colonel John in the Classic. replacing Garrett Gomez. Earlier this week, agent Ron Anderson said Gomez would be aboard Go Between, trained by Bill Mott.

With regard to Armed, Harty said he was “leaning towards the (Dirt) Mile” for the Grade I Goodwood Handicap winner. “But I’ll make a final decision after I work him here on Tuesday,” Harty said.


Baker Sees Bear Now. Trainer Reade Baker has traveled from Woodbine to Santa Anita to supervise Bear Now'sworkout today for the Ladies’ Classic. “Everything’s perfect,” the Ontario native said. “All the reports I’ve got on her are great.”

Bear Now ran in the 2007 Distaff but didn't fare well, finishing eighth to Ginger Punch in the 1 1/8-mile race over a sloppy track at Monmouth Park.


West Side Bernie Doing Well. Trainer Kelly Breen says West Side Bernie, winner of the Grade III Kentucky Cup Juvenile at Turfway Park on Sept. 27 is ready to roll in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. “He’s kicking the barn down,” said the 39-year-old trainer. Breen worked as an assistant for Ben Perkins Sr. from 1994 until 2000.


In Summation Working Toward Sprint. In Summation, prepping for the Sprint, worked four furlongs for Christophe Clement at Santa Anita yesterday in :48.40 (12/36), handily.

In Summation hasn't raced since he finished fourth at Del Mar in the Grade II Pat O'Brien Handicap on Aug. 24. Without excuses that day, he had plenty of legitimate ones in a second-place run on July 27 in the Grade I Bing Crosby Handicap, also at Del Mar.


Hendricks Sees Mile As Toughest Race. Daytona, who's been working well lately, is on course for the Mile, although trainer Dan Hendricks said he recognizes it is traditionally the most competitive Breeders’ Cup races.

“I think it’s been tougher over the years than any other race,” Hendricks said. “You always have speed, you always have mid-movers and you always have closers. I’m one of six with speed. Put it this way: if they’re in front of me, they’re going too fast.”

Last time out, Daytona finished fourth in the Grade II Del Mar Mile on Aug. 24. Ridden by Alex Solis, Daytona was beaten 1 1/2 length after attending a fast half-mile pace set by Storm Military--so maybe his placement was better than it looks.

Whatsthescript, the 2-1 favorite ridden by Garrett Gomez, unleashed a devastating rally in the stretch to win.

Bittel Road Waiting for California. Todd Pletcher assistant Michael Dilger said Bittel Road, who won Keeneland’s Woodford Reserve Bourbon on Oct. 5, would be taken to Santa Anita on either Thursday or next Tuesday. He might work at Keeneland before his departure, depending on when he leaves.

Casino Drive Will Get Big Hype. Casino Drive came out of his Sunday allowance win at Santa Anita in good shape, and there is no doubt here that he'll turn out as a headline horse in the Breeders' Cup Classic in the absence of Big Brown. That will suit players of other competitors in the race just fine.

Casino Drive has great prowess, and he might win the Classic. Still, he has only raced three times and has not faced anything like he'll see in Breeders' Cup.

Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for Casino Drive’s owner, said Casino Drive will have one more slow work at Hollywood Park. Oddly enough, he also said he hasn't yet talked to Victor Espinoza, who had the mount on Sunday, about riding back on Casino Drive.


Midnight Lute Steaming. The Monday workout for Midnight Lute was recorded by clockers at five furlongs in :56.80 (1/53), handily, but trainer Bob Baffert said the final eighth mile was a gallop out.

“Midnight Lute actually worked a half,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “They got him galloping out, but he actually went :45 or something like that. . . I got him in :57 (for five furlongs). It was a really strong workout, and that’s what I wanted.


Baffert Likes Midshipman. Midshipman's Monday work was clocked at six furlongs in 1:11.40 (1/16), handily. Baffert said the colt is coming along nicely. “Midshipman went really nice, probably the best he’s looked. I like the way he came out of the Norfolk. He’s fitter, and he’s more relaxed. I really like the way he went in his work today.”


Intangaroo Work Keeps Sherlock Happy. The closing sprinter filly Intangaroo, who's won three Grade I races this year, remained on schedule for trainer Gary Sherlock when he went five furlongs in :59.60 (4/35) at Hollywood Park yesterday.

According to Sherlock, Intangaroo’s initial success raised his eyebrows, but now her accomplishments have become the norm.

Sherlock said was surprised after the committed stretch runner won her first Grade I race, the Santa Monica Handicap at Santa Anita early this year at 26-1 odds, but that he has come to accept her quality and her late-running style as authentic. Intangeroo went on to win the Grade I Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day and the Grade I Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 24.

The Filly & Mare Sprint will be her first start since the Ballerina.

“Her first Grade I win surprised me,” Sherlock said, “but the last two haven’t. The Santa Monica was a definite surprise, but the last one wasn’t at all. I thought she’d win that race.”

Duke of Marmalade: set for Curlin showdown

Aidan O'Brien has confirmed he plans to enter both Duke Of Marmalade and Henrythenavigator in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Saturday week.

O'Brien revealed he has already booked top American jockey John Velasquez to ride whichever horse stable jockey Johnny Murtagh rejects for the ten-furlong feature.

It will first time that either colt has tackled a synthetic surface, while for Henrythenavigator it will be a first trip in excess of a mile.

O'Brien admits that both his charges are coming off the back of arduous campaigns, but remains hopeful they can make their presence felt.

"Both horses have had long seasons," O'Brien told The Independent. "But we feel they're still in good form, and obviously we think they'll be okay on the surface, though you never know until you try it in race conditions.

"We have booked Johnny Velasquez to ride one of them, but we don't have to decide which until nearer the time."

The duo will have to square up to last year's Classic victor Curlin in California after connections confirmed him as an intended starter on Tuesday.

Bobby Frankel has switched gears and will run Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) winner MAST TRACK (Mizzen Mast) in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) instead of the $1 million Dirt Mile.

"With Big Brown out, it changes the picture," Frankel said Wednesday morning. "My horse has speed, and he can get the distance. He won the Gold Cup at a mile and a quarter."

Frankel, who also owns Mast Track, is Oak Tree's all-time leading conditioner with 269 wins. Mast Track has a 5-2-1 record from 12 starts, with earnings of $734,622.

Tyler Baze, who rode Mast Track to a front-running, 2 1/4-length upset victory in the June 28 Gold Cup at 10-1 odds, will ride Mast Track in the Classic after a two-race absence. Rafael Bejarano rode the four-year-old colt to a third-place finish in the Pacific Classic (G1) two starts back, and John Velazquez was aboard in his last start, an eighth-place finish in the Goodwood S. (G1) on September 27.


"I guess Bobby figured Tyler was the last one to win a Grade 1 million-dollar race on him at a mile and a quarter," said Baze's agent, Ron Ebanks, in explaining the reunion. "Tyler was available, so he put him on. I was looking at another horse or two. I got offered Mast Track and I jumped on him, because they were lucky together, and the Classic is setting up without much speed, so it could be a big opportunity. We've got a chance to get lucky here. Tyler's very excited. You've got to turn the page in this business. The last race is over with. We're looking at the next one."

Frankel also plans to run CHAMPS ELYSEES (GB) (Danehill) in the Classic. Alan Garcia will ride.

Harty: Well Armed Still Possible for Classic. Eoin Harty, who's been leaning to the Dirt Mile with Grade I Goodwood winner Well Armed to the Dirt Mile, said yesterday “it was not set in stone” and that the Classic is still a consideration. Well Armed, like Mast Track, races forwardly.

Getting the best of a wild cavalry charge down the stretch, Well Armed and Aaron Gryder defeated Tiago, holding him off by a length in the Goodwood. The top eight finishers were within 4 3/4 lengths of each other at the conclusion of the race.


Casino Drive Still on Track. Japanese invader Casino Drive, who won his debut race at Santa Anita last Sunday--and who's three-for-three overall--jogged one lap around Hollywood Park’s 1 1/8-mile Cushion Track Wednesday and is scheduled to ship across town to Santa Anita next Thursday for the Classic, according to Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for owner Hidetoshi Yamamoto.


Idiot Proof Update. Idiot Proof worked six furlongs on Santa Anita’s firm turf Wednesday in 1:13.80 (1/2) under Garrett Gomez for Cliff Sise Jr.

Sise sized things up after Idiot Proof struggled on the main track in the Grade I Ancient Title on Sept. 27 and said he would race in the Turf Sprint instead of the Sprint. Idiot Proof was second in the 2007 Sprint at Meadowlands.


Forever Together: No Sweat. Trainer Jonathan Sheppard said he's concerned with how Forever Together will handle possible hot weather in Southern California during Breeders’ Cup because she does not sweat. Forever Together receives supplements for her condition, and a can of Guinness beer is poured over her evening feed.

“You know your friends that drink a lot of beer tend to perspire heavily?” Sheppard said. “The same thing with horses.”

Forever Together won the Grade I First Lady at Keeneland on Oct. 3, and she worked yesterday in preparation for her start in the Filly and Mare Turf. Ridden by Barry Wiseman, a Sheppard assistant, the 5-year-old was timed in 1:00.80 (4/18) for five furlongs.

“It was easy for her,” said Wiseman. “She finished strong. That’s what we wanted, a mini-work.”

Forever Together also won the Grade I Diana at Saratoga on July 26. She's scheduled to depart Keeneland for Santa Anita next Wednesday. Sheppard said Julien Leparoux, who has ridden Forever Together in her past three races, would again have the mount in Breeders’ Cup.

I dont know about anything else but im going to have to stay away from midnite lute because his works are just as dazzling as they were before the obrien. If you remember he set the track record at 7f in a work out so ima watch closely

Headley Horses Near the Goal. Bruce Headley reports that Surf Cat (Dirt Mile), Street Boss (Sprint) and Magificience (Filly & Mare Sprint) “are all on schedule. They’ve had their final workouts. All they need are a blowout now next Thursday,” the trainer said.

Murtagh sticks with The Duke; Dettori to pilot Raven's Pass

Johnny Murtagh is set to maintain his partnership with DUKE OF MARMALADE (Danehill) in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita next Saturday. Trainer Aidan O'Brien, who outlined running plans on Thursday, pointed to the five-times Group 1 winner as the retained jockey's likely ride over English (Eng-G1) and Irish (Ire-G1) Two Thousand Guineas hero HENRYTHENAVIGATOR (Kingmambo).

"For the Classic, you need a horse who definitely gets a mile and a quarter," the Ballydoyle conditioner told a press conference. "It is a race where you have to be tough and hard. The Duke is an unbelievably tough horse with a great will to win, and if any horse can cope it will be him. We can't be sure that Henry will get a mile and a quarter, and at the moment Johnny is favoring riding Duke of Marmalade over Henrythenavigator. We have booked John Velazquez for whichever one he doesn't ride."

O'Brien had earlier told the Racing Post that SOLDIER OF FORTUNE (Galileo [Ire]) and RED ROCK CANYON (Rock of Gibraltar [Ire]) would contest the Turf (G1); WESTPHALIA (Danehill Dancer) and HEART SHAPED (Storm Cat) would run in the respective Juvenile Turf and Juvenile Fillies Turf; HALFWAY TO HEAVEN (Pivotal) was set to line up in the Filly & Mare Turf (G1); and US RANGER (Danzig) would tackle the Mile (G1).

In other jockey news, trainer John Gosden announced that Frankie Dettori will replace Jimmy Fortune on Princess Haya of Jordan's RAVEN'S PASS (Elusive Quality) in the Classic. Fortune, the three-year-old's regular rider, is uncertain about his level of fitness after serving a 10-day suspension on the eve of the meeting. Dettori got acquainted with the Queen Elizabeth II S. (Eng-G1) winner in a racecourse gallop at Lingfield Wednesday morning.

"I discussed it with Jimmy and, at this moment in time, he is serving a ban for a minor infringement at Nottingham," Gosden told the Racing Post. "He's pointed out to me very clearly that it is not possible for jockeys to be razor sharp and race-fit for that kind of racing, having served a 10-day suspension. We talked it through and Frankie will ride Raven's Pass and DONATIVUM (Cadeaux Genereux)."

The latter, the Tattersalls Million winner and Juvenile Turf contender Donativum, was also on track at Lingfield on Thursday.

In other Breeders' Cup news:

Trainer Bob Baffert reported Thursday that DEL CONTE (Point Given) was declared out of the Juvenile Turf due to filling in a front ankle.

"We discovered it yesterday and we weren't happy," Baffert said, "but we were hoping for the best. He'll be fine, but we estimate he will be out 30 to 60 days."

Del Conte, a turf maiden winner two back, was coming off a close fourth in the Norfolk S. (G1).

Reigning Horse of the Year CURLIN (Smart Strike), who is pre-entered to defend his title in the Classic, galloped a mile Thursday on Santa Anita's Pro-Ride main track. The day before, he attracted a crowd while schooling in the paddock during Wednesday's 5TH race.

"He has a fan club everywhere he goes," said Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen. "He takes it all pretty good."

Unbeaten Japanese-based sophomore CASINO DRIVE (Mineshaft) enjoyed a slow canter on Hollywood Park's 1 1/8-mile Cushion Track Thursday and is "doing fine" for the Classic, according to Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for owner Hidetoshi Yamamoto.

Victor Espinoza, who rode Casino Drive to a three-quarter length victory in a Sunday allowance at Santa Anita, anticipates another strong performance in the Classic.

"It was good that he had a race over this track," Espinoza said. "He handled it good, and it was a nice ride for me. It was like a workout, and he probably needed the race."

Casino Drive had not raced since May 10, when he won the Peter Pan S. (G2) at Belmont Park.

Multiple Argentinean Group 1 star LADY SPRINTER (Orientate) is scheduled to work a half-mile Friday between the 4TH and 5TH races at Santa Anita with stablemate Bartley (Arg) (Incurable Optimist) in preparation for the Filly & Mare Sprint.

Also scheduled for a Friday work is Alcibiades S. (G1) winner DREAM EMPRESS (Bernstein), who will take to the track at Keeneland to tune up for the Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Mile contender SHAKIS (Ire) (Machiavellian), a two-time hero of the Bernard Baruch H. (G2), will work at Keeneland either Friday or Saturday.

Breeders' Cup releases race order for World Championships

Breeders' Cup officials have released the official race order for the 25th Breeders' Cup World Championships to be held on October 24-25 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.

Championship Friday will be a 10-race program, beginning at 2:05 p.m. (EDT) (11:05 a.m. [PDT]), with two Santa Anita allowance races followed by five Breeders' Cup races. ESPN2 will provide coverage from 3:30-6:30 p.m. (EDT) on the first ever major racing card devoted exclusively to female horses. Friday's program concludes with the Las Palmas H. (G2) and two Santa Anita allowance races.

Championship Saturday features nine Breeders' Cup races on an 11-race card, starting with the Breeders' Cup Marathon at 1:10 p.m. (EDT) (10:10 a.m. [PDT]). ABC will cover the races from 1-3:30 p.m. (EDT), then ESPN will take over for the remainder of the Breeders' Cup card from 3:30-7 p.m. (EDT)

Post time for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) will be 6:45 p.m. (EDT) (3:45 p.m. [PDT]). The Damascus S. and Oak Tree Derby (G2) will follow the Classic.

Clocker: Zenyatta shows 'em who's the boss

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Keep it under your hat, but the clocker says Zenyatta looks like she's ready to run a big one in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic.

Obviously, nobody needs any added incentive to wager on the undefeated Zenyatta, who is the marquee name on Day 1 of this year's Breeders' Cup. But for the overwhelming number of horseplayers who plan to single Zenyatta in every multiple wager possible, they can do so with even more confidence after watching her breeze an effortless six furlongs in 1:11.66 seconds under regular exercise rider Steve Willard on Friday morning on Hollywood Park's Cushion Track surface.

As is her custom, Zenyatta waited until well after the renovation break before making her appearance along with regular workmate Bronzino shortly after 9 a.m. But even though the racetrack was nearly deserted at the time, Zenyatta and her mate had the misfortune of finding themselves running right up behind a pair of workers from trainer Mike Puype's barn immediately after breaking off to begin their move at the 5 1/2-furlong pole.

Zenyatta gave Bronzino, who had jockey Mike Smith aboard, a 1 1/2-length head start leaving the short pole, but within an eighth of a mile Zenyatta had dropped about four lengths behind her target, with Willard immediately easing her well off the inside rail. Zenyatta cruised through her opening three furlongs in fractions of 12.50, 24.35, and 36.53 seconds, giving the appearance of doing little more than open galloping while at the same time attempting to keep a safe distance behind the Puype set.

Bronzino maintained about a four-length advantage entering the stretch with Zenyatta continuing very wide off the turn, and for an instant it actually appeared she might not be able to catch her mate. Then she changed leads. Suddenly Zenyatta began to accelerate, gobbling up the ground with her huge, powerful strides, and readily overtaking not only Bronzino inside the sixteenth pole but both the Puype workers about 100 yards past the finish line.

Despite losing a good deal of ground coming out of the turn and under no perceptible urging, Zenyatta completed her final three furlongs in 35.13 seconds before galloping out seven-eighths in 1:25.06. It gave every indication she will again be bringing her very imposing "A" game to Santa Anita on Breeders' Cup day.

Lady Sprinter works at Santa Anita

The pace scenario for the Filly and Mare Sprint, already expected to be a torrid one, may have gotten even a little quicker after the aptly named Lady Sprinter finally flashed the type of speed she had shown winning 8 of 9 starts in Argentina when she worked a crisp half-mile in 45.32 between races at Santa Anita on Friday.

Lady Sprinter was sent out in company with stablemate Bartley. But that plan went awry shortly after the work began when Lady Sprinter, who was rank and full of run approaching the half-mile pole, immediately left her partner in the dust.

After failing to show her best speed over the Pro-Ride surface in six previous works at Santa Anita, Lady Sprinter zipped along through fractions of 11.32 and 22.08 seconds for the opening eighth- and quarter-mile splits. The Group 1 winner changed leads right on cue in early stretch and completed her final quarter in 23.24 with jockey Octavio Vergara offering little encouragement throughout. She appeared to tire slightly during the gallop-out, covering five-eighths in 58.82.

While the work appears to be a marked improvement over any of her earlier local trials, the chances of Lady Sprinter surviving a seemingly inevitable pace battle with the likes of Indyanne, Dream Rush and Dearest Trickski going an eighth of a mile farther than she has ever raced have to be considered slim at best.

Along with Lady Sprinter, other Breeders' Cup main-track workers at Santa Anita on Friday included La Tee (Filly and Mare Sprint), five furlongs in 59.40 seconds; Rebellion (Dirt Mile), five-eighths in 1:00.40, and Doremifasollatido (Juvenile Fillies), seven-eighths in 1:25.40. Emmy Darling (Juvenile Fillies Turf) also breezed five furlongs in 59.80 over the turf.

* Friday's notable Breeders' Cup workers around the country included Smooth Air, six furlongs in 1:12.60 on dirt at Calder in preparation for the Classic, and Lewis Michael, seven-eighths in 1:25.60 on Keeneland's Polytrack for the Dirt Mile.

Dream Empress Puts in Final Tuneup. Yesterday at Keeneland, Grade I Darley Alcibiades winner Dream Empress worked five furlongs in company with stablemate Bounissimo. The pair was timed in :59.80 (8/29). Dream Empress, a Bernstein filly trained by Ken McPeek, was pre-entered in the Juvenile Fillies and Juvenile Fillies Turf .


Catalano Pair Work Well at Keeneland. Trainer Wayne Catalano sent out two Breeders’ Cup-bound horses for works at Keenelnd, multiple Grade II winner Lewis Michael and stakes winner Sugar Mom. Lewis Michael worked seven furlongs in 1:25.60 (1/1), and Sugar Mom covered five furlongs in :59.40 (3/29).

Winner of the Grade II Pat O’Brien at Del Mar on Aug. 24 in his most recent race, Lewis Michael was pre-entered in the Dirt Mile and the Sprint. Sugar Mom, who won Turfway’s Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies on Sept. 27, was pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Catalano said both horses would leave Keeneland for California on Sunday.

Breeders’ Cup horses expected to work at Keeneland this weekend are:

--On Saturday, Grade I Shadwell Turf Mile runner-up and Grade II Baruch winner Shakis;

At Santa Anita. Reigning Horse of the Year Curlin galloped a mile and a half Friday on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride main track.

Japanese invader Casino Drive enjoyed “an easy canter” at Hollywood Park Friday and remains on course for the Classic, according to Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for owner Hidetoshi Yamamoto. The colt was also pre-entered in the Marathon.

John Sadler, who's been on fire for months in Southern California, is considering the $250,000 Grade II Las Palmas Handicap at Oak Tree on Oct. 24 or the $500,000 Grade I Matriarch at Hollywood Park on Nov. 30 for Black Mamba, who was not supplemented to the Filly & Mare Turf.

“We didn’t want to spend ($300,000),” Sadler said. "But we’re looking forward to our other horses running in the Breeders’ Cup. All their preps have been good, and we have a bunch of works tomorrow and the next two or three days. We have horses that have been the best in their divisions here, but these are hard races to win because the horses are really good. But I think we’ll run well.”


Sadler on the Classic. Asked his thoughts on the Classic, in which he does not have a runner, Sadler said, “I think Curlin’s the horse to beat, because of his record and the great work he had the other day (five furlongs on Pro-Ride Monday in :59.00, breezing). He’s been very well managed. Another horse that runs well here is Go Between. We’ve seen him a couple times, and he’s a nice horse, too. It’ll be fun.”


Top Notch Ladies Classic. The $2-million Ladies' Classic on Friday showcases one of its most talented fields in recent years, headlined by the undefeated Zenyatta, owned by record impresario Jerry Moss and his wife, Ann, and trained by John Shirreffs.

The 4-year-old filly has won all eight of her career starts, including three Grade I events, the Apple Blossom, Vanity and Lady's Secret three weeks ago at Santa Anita.

She'll be challenged by defending Ladies' Classic champion Ginger Punch of Stronach Stables. Ginger Punch has won 5 of 7 starts this year and seeks to become the first back-to-back Ladies' Classic winner since Bayakoa in 1989-90.

Among the other formidable runners in the Ladies' Classic are the Chilean-bred Cocoa Beach, who defeated Ginger Punch in her last start, the Beldame in New York; the 3-year-old Music Note, winner of three Grade I races in 2008--including an 8 1/2-length romp in the Gazelle Stakes at Belmont; the 5-year-old mare Hystericalady, who has four wins this year and was recently second to Zenyatta in the Lady's Secret, and Carriage Trail, who set a track record in the Grade I Juddmonte Spinster last time out.

Red Giant Out of Breeders' Cup, Retired

Red Giant, who was pre-entered in the Oct. 25 Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT), will miss the Breeders' Cup World Championships due to fever and has been retired.

The 4-year-old Giant's Causeway colt was scheduled to breeze this morning at Santa Anita. A routine temperature check showed the colt had a fever and a decision was made by trainer Todd Pletcher and owner John Fort of Peachtree Stable to skip the work and withdraw Red Giant from the race.

“We have been monitoring him closely this morning, and there's been no change,” said Pletcher. “I spoke with John, and the horse will be retired to stud as planned. It’s very disappointing. The Breeders’ Cup was to be his last race.”

Red Giant’s two starts on the turf this year produced wins in the Aug. 3 Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IIT) and Sept. 27 Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship Stakes (gr. IT), where he set a world record of 1:57.16 for 1 ¼ on the turf.

Red Giant, who is out of the Kingmambo mare Beyond the Sun, retires with a career record of six wins from 11 starts, including last year’s Virginia Derby (gr. II), and $1,092,410 in earnings.

Stardom Bound Work. Stardom Bound, who breezed five furlongs in :59.20, impressed trainer Christopher Paasch. “The time wasn’t as impressive as the way she went,” he said. “She galloped out in 1:11 4/5.”


Baffert: 'Lute Was Bad Everywhere.' Defending Sprint champion Midnight Lute is doing better now than he was in the summer, trainer Bob Baffert said. “I’m going to breeze him Monday, but it’s going to be very light,” Baffert said. “All I can tell you is that he’s healthy, his mind is really great. At Del Mar, his mind was not right. He was bad at the gate, he was bad everywhere. Everything is in place right now.”

Baffert said Midnight Lute would run without blinkers in the Sprint. Asked if there would be enough speed to set up Midnight Lute for a late run, a la the 2007 Sprint, Baffert said, “The break is important. He needs to break with the field. He’s going to be behind, but he needs to break with them, because they’re going to outfoot him a ways until he gets in gear.”


Sadler A Busy Man. “We had three horses work at Santa Anita today,” trainer John Sadler said, “Cost of Freedom (Sprint, five furlongs in :59.40 (13/54)), Zappa (Marathon, seven furlongs in 1:25.40 (1/4)) and Whatsthescript (Mile, seven furlongs in 1:26.40 (3/4)). They all went really, really well.”


Casino Drive Update. Japanese invader Casino Drive cantered one lap around Hollywood Park’s 1 1/8-mile main track yesterday and remains on course for the Classic. “He will have a slow breeze at Hollywood on Wednesday,” said Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for owner Hidetoshi Yamamoto.


Potts Cup Debut. This will mark the first Breeders’ Cup for Clinton Potts, who'll ride Grade I Vosburgh winner Black Seventeen for trainer Brian Koriner in the Sprint. Koriner said Black Seventeen is scheduled to work tomorrow at Santa Anita.

ANALYSIS: After a quarter of a century, Cup impressarios have suddenly discovered that a lot of horses are bred, born and reared to sprint over the grass, so this year the Turf Sprint makes a belated debut on the Cup menu.

As you'd expect, it's jammed with flying machines from all over the country and abroad. Look for fireworks. They'll fly out of the gate and won't catch a breath till the wire. And just to pique the mix, they'll have to negotiate Santa Anita's unique dogged-leg, downhill turf course over 6 ½ furlongs.

The huge eye-catcher is likely favorite Mr. Nightlinger, a son of Indian Charlie, who has won five straight turf sprints (two of them Grade 3's), all with triple-digit Beyer speed figures, all blazed on the front end. The catch: he's unbeatable at five and five-and-a-half furlongs, but he's never won at six-and-a-half.

LIVE LONGSHOTS: Get Funky, a Californian sprinter, who has won two over the course, including the Grade 3 Morvich, has strong closing punch and is tempting at 10-1, as is another local, California Flag, who beat Get Funky last out, and is listed at 10-1.

THE BET: The Europeans are sending a terrific filly, Fleeting Spirit, who has competed against the best with distinction and looms a big threat here, at a nifty price. If Mr Nightlinger staggers at the finish, she'll run him down.

Turf
The last BC Turf contested at Santa Anita, in 2003, produced the only dead heat to win in the history of the event. High Chaparral and Johar couldn't be separated by the photo-finish camera at the wire.


AdvertisementThat's not the kind of history that repeats itself. But given the quality and diversity of the 12 pre-entered Thursday for the race, the winning margin figures to be a lot less than the 2¾-length average for the four runnings since, skewed by the 7-length runaway of English Channel a year ago at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.
Counting High Chaparral in the dead heat, six of the eight Turf winners since 2000 ran their final BC Turf prep in Europe. And there's an interesting contingent coming from the continent with visions of padding that record.

Aidan O'Brien, who brought High Chaparral over for a Turf win in '02 and the dead heat in '03, has two entered. And unless O'Brien knows something the rest of us don't, always a good possibility, it appears Red Rock Canyon, winless in 17 previous starts, is strictly in to ensure a good pace for more highly regarded Soldier of Fortune.

Soldier of Fortune won the Coronation Stakes at Epsom in England and was third in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 5.

Conduit, a winner of the St. Leger and on-the-board finisher in two other graded stakes in England, will be saddled by Sir Michael Stoute. Eagle Mountain, a former O'Brien charge now trained by Michael de Kock, completes the overseas group and comes in off an Oct. 3 win at Newmarket.

The U.S.-raced group is an eclectic bunch that can be divided into East and West Coast-prepped, plus one astonishing veteran and an intriguing 3-year-old.

Grand Couturier leads the East Coast group having won the Sword Dancer at Saratoga and Turf Classic at Belmont since August and having been chased home by Turf entrant Dancing Forever in those events. Red Rocks' main credential is a victory in the Man o' War – over Classic favorite Curlin – on July 12. But Red Rocks hasn't run since.

Coming out of the Clement L. Hirsch prep at Santa Anita on Sept. 27 are the 1-2-4 finishers Red Giant, Out of Control and Spring House. The latter won the Del Mar Handicap on Aug. 23 at Del Mar for trainer Julio Canani and owner R.D. Hubbard.

Better Talk Now has been entered for a fifth straight year. The now 9-year-old gelding won the Turf for trainer H. Graham Motion and owner Bushwood Racing Partners in 2004 at Lone Star Park in Texas and has subsequently produced seventh-, second-and fourth-place finishes.

Winchester, a 3-year-old, will be taking on older rivals in his first start since defeating age group contemporaries on the turf in the Secretariat Stakes in August at Arlington Park in Chicago.


Classic
Only the presence of Big Brown, lost to an injury Monday, could have made this, the ultimate of the 14 championship races, more appealing.
In lieu of a Big Brown vs. Curlin matchup, it's Curlin vs. The World. And reigning Horse of the Year Curlin could have his work cut out for him making his first start on a synthetic surface against rivals proven on synthetics in the United States and accomplished runners from Europe with license to transfer turf form to the engineered surface as has been frequently done in the past.

A good, albeit nonwinning effort, likely would secure Curlin, the sport's first $10 million earner, a second Horse of the Year title. But to win a second straight Classic, the Steve Asmussen-trained, Robby Albarado-ridden 4-year-old will have to vanquish:

European invaders Duke of Marmalade, Henrythenavigator and Raven's Pass.

The 'Duke' won Group I events at Ascot and Newmarket over the summer and then finished third in the Arc de Triomphe. Raven's Pass and Henrythenavigator were 1-2 in the Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot on Sept. 27.

Synthetic surface veterans Go Between, Well Armed, Mast Track and Awesome Gem. It's a familiar group to San Diego fans from its 1-2-3-7 finish in the Pacific Classic in August at Del Mar. And Well Armed – who won the San Diego Handicap before the runner-up effort in the Pacific Classic – went on to win the main prep for this race, the Goodwood Handicap at Santa Anita on Sept. 27.

A feisty group of 3-year-olds that includes unbeaten Japanese import Casino Drive; Santa Anita Derby and Travers Stakes winner Colonel John; and Pyro. Led by Curlin, 3-year-olds finished 1-2-4-5-6 in last year's Classic.

“With 14 runners of this quality, there's going to be a lot of luck involved,” Asmussen said. “We respect them all, but we just worry about what we can control and try to get (Curlin) as well prepared as we can.

“We want him to be the same horse that he has spoiled us by being so consistently throughout his career.”
