from Sporting Life: John Oxx's brilliant colt Sea The Stars has been retired. The six-time Group One winner had been in the mix for the Breeders' Cup Classic but connections have decided to call time on his career. Oxx had intimated after his latest win in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe that retirement was likely for the son of Cape Cross, and it was confirmed in a statement this afternoon.

Really disappointing news . Just from a fan standpoint why wouldnt you wait til after the Breeder's Cup Classic. This is what holds horse racing down is the best horses dont run against each other and that what people want to see, I mean where is the Rachael vs. Zenyatta race friggen greedy owners have to put there wallets and ego's aside and think of the greater good the sport of horse racing and until they do horse racing will always be an afterthought sad to say.

The fact of the matter is, the Breeders Cup just doesn't hold the same importance over in Europe as is does in America. Sea The Stars just won Europe's championship race, and the Breeders Cup is more like an afterthought in most cases. A good example is the fact that Fame and Glory is staying in Europe to run in the Champion Stakes, rather than coming to America for the BC Turf (where he would likely be the favorite). And that's a horse who's trained by a guy (Aiden O'Brien) who generally brings more horses over for the BC than anyone else. Regarding Sea The Stars, bottom line, his connections probably felt it was better to go out in a blaze of glory (for breeding purposes) than to risk a potential loss over a surface on which he's never competed. They probably felt it was too great a risk to take.

Again MONEY is the main factor. Euros look at American racing as a second class sport to there horse industry. Zarkava retired after the same race last year for Breeding purposes and now Sea The Stars gone. The Euros are no different than anyone in retiring horses early for breeding. They all better start taking notice of the 30-40% sell backs at the sales. These sales are going to plummet in the next 3-4 years. They need to let the horses run at least through 4 yo. For every 100 horses went through the ring this year 30-40 of them didn't even sell. Horse Racing is my favorite sport hands down but the end is coming near if big changes aren't made. There will be numerous farms and tracks closing within the next 5 years.
