Nicanor, the full brother to 2006 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Barbaro, is one of ten three-year-olds entered in the $750,000 Virginia Derby (G2) at Colonial Downs on Saturday.

Bred and owned by Lael Stables, Nicanor enters the 1 1/4-mile turf stake undefeated in two starts on the grass, including a 15 1/4-length maiden victory on May 13 at Delaware Park.

Rosie Napravnik rode Nicanor in his two turf wins, but Jose Lezcano will pilot the colt in the Virginia Derby. Nicanor finished tenth in his career debut under Edgar Prado on the dirt and then second twice on dirt under Lezcano before trainer Michael Matz switched the Dynaformer colt to the turf.

The Virginia Derby drew the top four finishers from the June 20 $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup (G2): winner Battle of Hastings (GB) along with Straight Story, Lime Rickey, and Take the Points, respectively.

Straight Story, a New York-bred Giant’s Causeway colt owned by Richard Santulli, was carried eight-wide turning for home in the Turf Cup and re-rallied to miss by a head.

Nicanor has been on the lead at every call of his two turf races. On Saturday, he could face pace pressure from a number of horses, including Woodlawn Stakes winner Affirmatif, Jefferson Cup Stakes (G2) winner Florentino (Jpn), recent Colonial maiden and allowance winner Safety Valve, and Take the Points, who will wear blinkers for the first time on Saturday.

The race features the turf debut of Lanes End Stakes (G2) winner Hold Me Back (for video of the Lane's End Stakes, click here). The Giant’s Causeway colt has not run since finishing 12th in the Kentucky Derby.

Palm Beach Stakes (G3) winner El Crespo, most recently second in the Jefferson Cup, completes the field.
